Galileo Athletic MVP’s 2008-2009

The Galileo Academy 2008-2009 sports year closed with many highlights. None more exciting than the varsity baseball team playing their way to the championship game. Here’s a list of the MVP’s for each team.
Football (Varsity)
MVP: Dylan Nelson
Highlight of the season: “when we were ahead of burton 14-0 because our teamwork help put us in the lead.”
overview: This year was a learning experience for the young varsity team. Now during spring training they are amped and ready to go for next season. The Galileo Lions are going “full tilt”.
Football (Frosh/soph)
MVP: William Kay
highlight: “victory against Mission”
overview: The frosh/soph team finished the season with a record or 2-4. All though they started out the season well, they didn’t end it how they pictured it to end. Their victories coming from Burton (6-0), and Mission (28-24). Next year they expect more out of their season.
Golf (Girls)
MVP: Christina Trinh (Senior)

Overview: Compared to last year, this year’s varsity girl’s golf team had many new golfers. Most of the team were beginners and were still learning throughout the year. They ended their season with a record of (3-5), unfortunately not making the play offs.
Basketball (Girls Vars)
MVP: Courtney chew
highlight: “my double-double vs. ISA, and our win.”
overview: despite mid-season coach changes the ladty lions stil managed to reach the playoffs with a record of (5-8), but losing in the playoffs to rivals Washington.
Basketball (Girls JV)
MVP: Magoly Martinez F, Junior
Highlight: “It was fun working together and playing together all season.”
overview: The Galileo Girls JV Basketball Team finished tied for last with an overall record of 1-6. They tied with the Balboa Buccaneers with a 44-25 win earlier in this season; this was their only win.
Basktball (Boys Vars)
MVP: Tyler Nelson
Highlight of the seasons: “when we beat wash in overtime. the crowd noise was hectic.”
overview: All though there were ups and downs this season, they still managed to reverse their record of (6-10) to (10-6), and were able to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Lions came up short in the playoffs to Marshall (42-45). Also,
Basketball (Boys FS)
MVP: Kyle Fung
High light of the season:
Overview: This year was a learning experience for the young frosh/soph team. All though they did not go to the playoffs they improved their record from last year (1-8) to (3-5).
Badminton
MVP: Janice Su (Sophomore)
“It was a great season but the team could have had more spirit.”
Season Overview: The season for this year’s badminton team did well. They finished in 2nd place All-City after losing to Washington but it was still a successful season.
Tennis (Girls)
MVP: Sabrina Louie
Highlight: “when we played Lincoln, because overall as a team we played well.”
Overview: the girls tennis team this year didn’t get to the playoffs this year but still had a great season with a record of (3-3).
Track & Field
MVP: Dave Ramirez
highlight: “the team coming together and placing first in valejo track meet”
overview: all city has not happened yet, but according to cifsf.org, we have a lot of top 10 athletes on the record board.
Cross Country
MVP: Kendrick Chow and Betty Thai (both are 12th)
highlight: “I’d say it was unexpected to get 2nd as an overall team.” (Kendrick Chow)
Overview: the cross country squad unexpectedly placed 2nd for two years in a row. This year they took 2nd without the help of the basketball players. Next year they hope to place 1st.
Baseball (Vars)
Co-MVP: Cody Klein Pitcher, Sr. and Dylan Nelson P/C, Jr.
Highlight:“Playing at AT&T Park.”
overview: The Galileo Baseball Team finished second overall in their 2008-2009 season with an overall record of 11-3. They beat Lowell (10-4) 2-1 to advance in the playoffs, to play Washington (13-1). They lost the Championship game to the Washington Eagles 6-4. In spite of their loss, it was their first Championship appearance since the 1978 season, making it a truly remarkable feat.
Baseball (FS)
MVP: Erik Wilson, C/OF/P, Sophomore
Highlight: “My homerun against Wash!”
Summary: In the 2008-2009 season the Galileo’s Boys Frosh/Soph baseball finished last with an overall record with 1-7. Their only win of the season came on 3/23/09, 11-8 over Washington. The purpose of the team was to get better with every game, and they feel confident they did just that.
Fencing
MVP: Crystal Wing (Senior)
“The season went well, everyone worked hard. It was very memorable and exciting.”
Season Overview: The season for the fencing team was great. The girls team won 1st All-City and Crystal Wing finished 3rd individually. The boy’s team also did great especially near the end of the season. They started slowly but finished strong.
Golf (Boys)
MVP: Shota Toriumi (Senior)
“The season was unbelievable. I am so proud of everyone that worked hard and competed this year.”
Season Overview: There were many new golfers who never played before. The team worked hard and was competitive for the type of team that they had. They made big improvements throughout the season and by the end of the year, the scores were a lot lower.
Swimming
MVP: Jonathan Lu (Sophomore), Noelani Meteyry (Sophomore)
“It was a good experience. We started with a lot of swimmers and many left but it was still a good season overall.”
“The team was a lot bigger this year with a lot of new faces.”
Overview: The swimming team came into the season with little experience but ended with a good season. The JV boys did really well and overall, the swim team won a lot more medals than last season. The varsity boys relay team also finished in 2nd place.
Tennis (Boys)
MVP: Tony Mac
quote: “Personally, I think this is the best season out of a long time in Galileo. We made it to the play off this year and we are guaranteed to get a medal for double in All City.”
overview: The boys tennis team finished their season with a record of (4-2), but, also coming short in the playoffs against lincoln (4-3).
Volleyball (Boys)
MVP: Nick Lew
Season Highlight: (5-7) “The best part of the season was probably when we needed a big win and got it when we beat Washington at their place, it was one of the best feelings ever.”
Overview: The young Lion’s finished just short of the playoffs and finished with an impressive 5-7 record. The Lion’s lost 9 All-city players from last year’s regular season championship team, but still maintained a respectable record.
Volleyball (Girls Vars)
MVP: Nicole Lim
Season Highlight: (7-4)” Placing 4th in the gold division at the Oak Grove tournament, we got to bond and we knocked off the host team.”
Overview: After suffering through numerous injuries, the Galileo girl’s varsity team managed a great record, however the girl’s did not make the playoffs. Wendy Xu and Nicole Lim received all-city first team honors.
Volleyball (FS)
MVP: Linda Lim
Season highlight: (5-4)“When we won our first game as a team, we had a lot of new players so winning the first won felt great.”
Overview: Even with 2 returning players, the Galileo girl’s junior varsity volleyball team was able to surpass last year’s 3-6 record. The team will return all but one starter and will be a threat next season.
Soccer (Girls)
MVP: Magaly Martinez Season Highlight: (8-7) “Winning games and getting to bond with my teammates during the season, we call got closer.”
Overview: By the slimmest of margins, the Galileo girl’s soccer team was not able to make the playoffs. They finished one game short of the playoffs. Soccer MVP, Magaly Martinez, received all-city first team honors.
Soccer (Boys)
Co-MVP: Diego Juarez , CF, Sr. and Alvaro Calle MCF, Sr.
Highlights:
Diego:” My goal against Burton since it was the last game before the playoffs against Lowell”
Alvarro: “Beating Lowell in the playoffs”
Overview: The Galileo Varsity Soccer team finished second overall in their 2008-2009 season. They had not made the championship game in over 20 years. They beat Lowell (14-2) in the playoffs on penalty kicks, to play Mission (15-1). They lost in the Championship game to the eventual champions Mission Bears 2-0. It was nevertheless a successful season.
Softball
Co-MVP: Wendy Au-Yeung and Nicole Lim
Season Highlight: “The best part of the season was when we got a triple play against Lincoln”
Overview: The girl’s varsity softball team had a rollercoaster season as they finished the season with a 6-7 record. The Lions made the playoffs and advanced from the 1st round, but their season ended in the semi’s with a loss to Lincoln.
Wrestling
MVP: Jimmy Zhen
highlight: “beating lowell”
overview: this year the wrestling team finished second in all city behind washington, but ended their season with a record of 4-2, losing to Mission, and washington.
