Galileo’s track team has had several setbacks this year, including the rain which prevented the track team from running outdoors and having Ms. Nancy Lambert filling in for head distant coach Jessica Foley, who is taking time off this year coaching as she is expecting her second child in the coming months. However, they have been working harder than ever getting ready for the track invitationals in March. “I think we are going to have a good year because of the athletes coming to practice and working hard every day. The field also helped tremendously as we do a lot of runs on it,” said Coach Kevin Adams.

This season the track team has a lot of new athletes, including a pair of freshmen, David Wu and Elizabeth Ng, who seem to have high potential with their past experience running track in middle school. Along with David and Elizabeth, the key players returning this year are Seniors, Lisa Liu(100 meter dash), Andrew Wong(100 meter dash) and John Zheng(discus throw), and Juniors, Julie Mo (100 meter dash), Allen Zhu(100 meter dash) and Henry Roa(400 meter dash). The players are very motivated, with Lisa Liu hoping to break the school record in the mile and Andrew Wong and John Zheng working on their 100 meter sprints and the discus. Allen Zhu said, “The team is coming strong as there are a lot of freshmen joining, but we still need more athletes, such as distant runners.”

The team still needs to fill in certain loopholes of the track events such as pole vault and the two mile so they can have a complete and competitive team this year as they face top competition from the Lowell Cardinals and the Lincoln Mustangs. Every year, Lowell has a complete team with over 150 members that dominate in every track event so Galileo’s track team has to match their numbers and give them the best competition they have to offer. With about 35 percent of the team participating in other sports, they can use their athletic ability from that sport to use on the track so they can have an advantage over their opponents.

Their biggest goal this season is to send as many athletes to the state meet as possible. Galileo’s track team had a good season back in the fall in Cross Country which brought out their interest in running Track. Coach Adams hopes the students will bring their work ethic from other sports to the track so the season will end on a high note. With the many freshmans coming out for track this year, they can be really good in four years with hard work and building momentum every year. With the numbers, we are hoping for a good season with Galileo Track running ahead of the other AAA competition
