There are high expectations for the Galileo Boy’s Tennis team after coming a long way in the past year. Last year the team meet expectations by winning a title in All City doubles championship, scoring third place in the All City tournament and beating Washington High School for the first time in sixty years. This year, with more experienced players, the team hopes to get more wins and claim the All City title.
Despite losing some key players ;Tony Mac, David Lin, and George Huang to graduation, the team expects all the players to still give it their all and beat Lincoln High School, because it was the first school they lost to last season. Senior Ernest Choi said “We expect not to only to get into All City finals but to be in first place. It is better to always aim higher than you can.”
This year the key players are sophomores David Konstantino, who attends SOTA, Juniors Juan Pablo Garcia and Jessie Wai, and Senior Thomas Lei. In speaking about this year’s key players, senior Rickie Penphatchanh said “They are our key players because they are the most skilled in the team. They exceed in accuracy, power, and control.”
Besides the key returning players, some new additions to the team this year are freshmen Austin Huang and Brian Zhou. Since it is their first year on the team, it is expected that, “they bond with the other members and learn from them, as in have fun and ask for advice when needed,” says Senior Jefferson La.
Everyone on the team, including the new additions, plans to work on their weaknesses, including; their accuracy, power and control. Another team goal is to encourage other players to practice on their own time and to not lose focus.
This season the team is motivated to work harder than ever because they had expected make it to the finals last year, but lost against Lincoln in the semi-finals. Senior, Kevin Wu, said with enthusiasm, “Last year we exploded out the bottom of the food chain, and now we’re going to climb even higher.” Senior, Andrew Jer, excitedly adds “This year’s team is way better than last year because they are more motivated to climb higher and to reach the top.”
Even with high expectations of team, the team always thinks positive. With excitement, everyone on the team including, head coach, Ms. Ramos thinks the team will make it to the top. She said “This is our year to continue our winning streak from last year.”
