With a more experienced team and more players this year, Galileo’s Boys volleyball team is looking to “bring the heat” to their opponents and improve from last season. This year the team has many returning players and talented freshmens who are starting. The team has been working hard in the off season and summer practices with open court so they can gain more experience as a team. The team is getting better and better as they improve every day. Coach Mark Huynh said, “Everyone works really hard, and the chemistry is good.”

The key returning players this season are Seniors, Nick Lew(Setter), Shaun Numera(Middle-Blocker), Bowen Tan(Libero), Sophmore Alan Tse(Opposite), and Freshmens, Nick Low(Setter) and Ken Lum(Defense Specialist). This year the team is more coordinated as the returning players have Varsity experience from years before and have better technique in plays. Their team chemistry has also made them a stronger team with each other.

Coming into this season, the team’s main goal is to reach the playoffs and hopefully advance to the championship finals. However, they have a long road ahead of them as there are many teams in the league that are going to battle it out for the championships. The team’s key opponents are the Balboa Buccaneers, Lowell Cardinals, Washington Eagles, and Lincoln Mustangs. Over the years, the Lowell Cardinals and Balboa Buccaneers have been the top teams in the AAA league. This year, the volleyball team has to step up and take it to Lowell and Balboa if they want to win the championship.

To get better competition, the volleyball team will be going to tournaments such as the Sacred Heart invitational and the UC Davis invitational so they can be better prepared for the AAA league competition. The tournaments will test the team of their skills as the Bay Area has top quality teams.

Captain, Nick Lew says, “I think we are progressing very well as a team and we are improving fast, as well as having a more experienced team this year that will bring us farther.

The volleyball team already has a (2-0) record with wins over the O’ Connel Boilermakers and the Washington Eagles and they hope that this momentum rides out to the end of the season at the championship game.
