The Sequel is Better: Varsity Baseball Outflies Eagles for Championship
2009 AAA Player of the Year and probable POY of 2010, senior pitcher, Dylan Nelson, hurled a 5-hitter with 11 strikeouts, to give Galileo’s baseball team a city championship, 5-4. Having avenged last season’s championship loss to the same team, Washington, and overcoming a 27-2 slaughter in the season finale, the lions also ended a 32-year title-less drought.
Simply put, “clutch” plays were the difference: Nelson dominated from the mound in the last 3 innings, Nelson also hit a triple and 2 doubles for the game, frosh Ken Rivera led off the bottom of the 7th with a key single, 1B Dustin Andrick who returned from a first inning injury then drew a walk to load the bases with 1 out, Erik Wilson smashed a crucial single to drive in the winning run after making 2 highlight defensive plays to keep the Eagles from scoring in the top of the 7th.
Nelson’s hard work on the field on off the field in keeping the team together while bringing along frosh prospects Rivera and 3B starter, Rafael Vergara, were key components in Coach Papa’s 18th season that finally yielded a championship. The championship had eluded Papa by inches in the past but 2010 was the year of “clutch” plays that made the difference.
